Spencer Health Learning Hub

Personalised, neuroaffirming academic support for every learner

The Spencer Health Learning Hub is a supportive after-school learning program for children and adolescents who would benefit from personalised academic support in a calm, flexible and neuroaffirming environment. Our Hub is located within our Gladesville practice, servicing the local area.

Our Learning Hub has been designed for students who may need extra support with Maths, English, confidence, attention, executive functioning, learning gaps or school-related stress — including neurodivergent learners and those who have not always felt well understood in traditional learning environments.

At Spencer Health, we believe children learn best when they feel safe, supported and understood. Our approach focuses on building confidence, strengthening skills and helping each student access learning in a way that works for their brain.

Learning Hub

What is the Spencer Health Learning Hub?

The Spencer Health Learning Hub provides small-group and individual academic support for primary and high school students.

Students are supported at their current learning level while working towards curriculum-aligned goals in Maths and English. Sessions are structured, but flexible, allowing tutors to adapt support to each student’s needs, pace and confidence.

This is not a high-pressure tutoring centre. It is a supportive learning environment where students are met where they are and guided forward with encouragement, scaffolding and practical skill-building.

Who is it for?

The Learning Hub may be suitable for children and young people who:

  • Need extra support in Maths and/or English
  • Have gaps in their learning or confidence
  • Find the school environment overwhelming
  • Benefit from smaller group environments
  • Need support with attention, organisation or task initiation
  • Experience anxiety, low confidence or school-related stress
  • Need academic support that is flexible, patient and neuroaffirming

Our approach

Our Learning Hub combines academic support with Spencer Health’s understanding of child development, neurodivergence, regulation and emotional wellbeing.

Our approach is:

Neuroaffirming

We recognise that children learn in different ways. We do not expect every student to learn, focus or participate in the same way. We aim to reduce shame, pressure and comparison while supporting meaningful progress.

Personalised

Students are supported at their current level, whether they need to consolidate foundation skills, build confidence with current classroom content, or extend their learning.

Curriculum-aligned

Sessions are designed to support key Maths and English skills relevant to the NSW curriculum, while allowing flexibility for individual learning needs.

Confidence-building

Many students who struggle academically have also experienced frustration, avoidance or reduced confidence. We focus on helping students experience success, build independence and feel more capable as learners.

Calm and supportive

Our sessions are designed to be structured without being rigid. We allow for regulation, encouragement, breaks where needed, and support that is responsive to the child in front of us.

Small-group learning sessions

Our small-group sessions provide targeted support in Maths and English. Groups are kept small, with up to 6–8 students, allowing students to receive individualised support within a group environment.

Students may attend one subject session or two consecutive sessions, such as Maths followed by English.

Maths support

Maths sessions may support students with areas such as:

  • Number skills and fluency
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Problem-solving and worded questions
  • Measurement and geometry
  • Algebra foundations for older students
  • Confidence approaching unfamiliar tasks

Students are supported at their current stage of learning, rather than expected to keep pace with a whole group doing identical work.

English support

English sessions may support students with areas such as:

  • Reading fluency and comprehension
  • Vocabulary development
  • Sentence structure
  • Spelling and written expression
  • Planning and organising ideas
  • Paragraph writing
  • Persuasive, imaginative and informative writing
  • Confidence getting started with writing tasks

Support is adjusted to each student’s current skills, confidence and learning profile.

Individual tutoring

In addition to small-group sessions, individual 1:1 academic support is available for children and young people who require more tailored support.

Individual tutoring may be appropriate for students who:

  • Need focused support in a specific area
  • Are not yet ready for a group setting
  • Require a more flexible pace
  • Have significant learning gaps
  • Need support with confidence, anxiety or task avoidance
  • Would benefit from a personalised learning plan

Individual sessions may be offered in Maths, English, homework support, study skills or executive functioning support, depending on the student’s needs and tutor availability.

Learning Snapshot

Before commencing, a brief Learning Snapshot session may be recommended to help us understand your child’s current learning profile and identify the most appropriate support.

The Learning Snapshot is a gentle, low-pressure session designed to help us understand:

  • Your child’s current skills in Maths and/or English
  • Areas of strength
  • Areas needing support
  • Confidence and approach to learning
  • How your child responds when tasks feel challenging
  • Helpful supports for engagement and regulation

This is not designed to feel like a formal test. The goal is to understand where your child is starting from so we can support them well from the beginning.
