Mara Barber

Registered Psychologist (Hornsby)

Mara is a registered psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia. She has bachelors in both Primary Teaching and Psychology (Social Science) from Charles Sturt University. Mara completed her Graduate Diploma of Psychology at Murdoch University, and a Masters of Counselling and Psychotherapy ant Edith Cowan University in WA.

Mara is passionate about working with children and adolescents. She has experience working with young people who have many different issues including those with low self-esteem, anxiety, low mood, and relational difficulties. She strives to be affirming of neurodivergent and gender diverse individuals. Mara likes working creatively and implementing opportunities to make counselling fun.

Mara currently also works as a school counsellor where she strives to empower young people to recognise their strengths, find positivity, and build resilience. She draws on a combination of interventions including psychodynamic psychotherapy, CBT, IPT, and ACT.

Having worked across schools, a mental health hospital, the disability sector, and out of home care, Mara is particularly interested in working with vulnerable young people. Knowing the importance of providing a safe space for counselling she strives to build feelings of trust and safety within the counselling relationship.
