EMDR Therapy: Avalon, Gladesville and Online!

EMDR Therapy now available at our Avalon & Gladesville sites and Online!

We are pleased to announce that we have several therapists now providing EMDR therapy both face to face and online.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy designed to assist in alleviating the symptoms associated with traumatic memories and disturbing life experiences. It is a highly validated therapy and is now recognised as frontline treatment for symptoms of trauma, PTSD and CPTSD.

EMDR is an evidence based treatment not only for those experiencing symptoms of trauma but for many other presentations including (but not limited to):

  • Phobias
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Panic Disorder
  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder
  • Borderline Personality Disorder
  • Depression
  • BiPolar Disorder

EMDR is recognised as having 8 phases, with reprocessing of distressing events/memories/thoughts making up just a portion of the process. Your therapist will initially meet with you and obtain an understanding of your history and goals for therapy. They will also make sure that EMDR is the right form of therapy for your needs.  During the second phase, your therapist will work with you to make sure you have the tools and skills required to manage emotional distress. Phases 3-6 involve reprocessing of “targets” that you have established as causing you distress. Your therapist will then close the reprocessing with you during phase 7 with phase 8 involving review of the progress or changes made following reprocessing.

If you would like more information about EMDR please head to the EMDR Association of Australia website https://emdraa.org/emdr-faq/

It is likely that your therapist will approach your support using a combination of EMDR and other validated therapies.  These could include:

  • Schema Therapy
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
  • Internal Family Systems Therapy
  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

EMDR is recognised as a validated therapy under the Better Access Scheme. As such, you can obtain a rebate for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.
